Description:
The Landscape Design Proposal was submitted as part of a Strategic Housing Development application to An Bord Pleanála led by Geraldine Coughlan Architects.
The landscape design strategy informed the overall layout of the proposed 251 houses and was instrumental in devising a hierarchy of residential cluster communities linked with pedestrian routes which would in turn connect a variety of public spaces.
Much emphasis is placed on creating safe, active and attractive public space to form a positive, inclusive and sustainable environment in which to live. The design proposals seek to optimise the use and enjoyment of the external environment by encouraging pedestrian movement around the site and positioning public open space in locations that are central to the development thereby promoting use and casual surveillance. Playgrounds, basket ball courts, pockets parks and “kick-about” lawns are provided within the site which is bounded by a pedestrian “Greenway” connecting the new development with neighbouring housing estates and local amenities.
The streets and public open spaces are varied and each has a unique character which will promote legibility. The quality and connectivity of the public open space will encourage all residents and visitors to use the outdoor environment in a more positive and meaningful way whether it’s to exercise, socialise or conduct day to day activities like walking to crèche or visiting a neighbour on the far side of the development.
An active external environment supports social interaction and promotes community building.
