Description:
This landscape proposal was submitted as part of a Strategic Housing Development application to An Bord Pleanála led by O’Mahony Pike Architects. The proposals comprise the development of 270 apartments in two new apartment buildings on the Eden site in Blackrock, Cork.
One of the proposed apartment buildings overlooks the old Ursuline Convent garden which is defined on three sides by mature Lime trees. The new development affords the opportunity to create a new public plaza along the length of the western side of the garden. The new plaza will strengthen the connection between the proposed new apartments and the existing convent garden; and help to promote use of this currently under utilised, beautiful, green, public space.
The apartments are raised over ground floor parking, creating courtyard gardens at podium level for the private use of residents. These gardens are shaped with raised beds planted with ornamental grasses and small trees; and furnished with bespoke street furniture and lighting. Sculptural vertical elements provide scale where opportunities for large trees are limited and also provide colour and winter interest.
